Virginia Withholding Tax
The Virginia Department of Taxation administers the state’s income tax withholding. Link to agency website: https://www.tax.virginia.gov/withholding-tax.
Apply for Virginia Withholding Tax Account Number. Ways to apply:
- Online Registration. Employers can register online through the Virginia Tax Online Services for Businesses for an account number for Virginia withholding tax and/or Virginia SUI tax.
- Tax account number(s) are assigned immediately after completing the online registration.
- Under Business Resources select Register a Business
- Complete the registration process
- Paper Form. Complete the agency’s Business Registration Form (R-1) and mail or fax to the Virginia Department of Taxation. Link to the Instructions for Business Registration Form (R-1).
Virginia State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) Tax
The Unemployment Insurance Division of the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) administers the state’s unemployment compensation program. Link to VEC website
Apply for Virginia SUI Tax Account Number. Ways to apply:
- Online Registration. Employers can register online through the Virginia Tax Online Services for Businesses for an account number for Virginia SUI tax and/or withholding tax.
- Tax account number(s) are assigned immediately after completing the online registration.
- Paper Form. Complete Form VEC FC-27, Report to Determine Liability for State Unemployment Tax and mail or fax to the agency.
