Tonya Quick, SHRM-CP
Tonya, sometimes known by her peers as TQuick, started HR by accident. She joined three friends in their start-up dreams and helped build, a bit haphazardly, their policies and departments. From there, she worked her way into specialized areas; background screening, onboarding, I9 projects, and eventually into an HR Department of 1 as the HR Manager where she built the department from the ground up for Porchlight Hospitality. Most recently, she successfully earned the SHRM-CP designation. Now, with the support of her family (human and furbabbies), she's ready to take the HR world by storm and shake it up.
What words of advice and encouragement would you give to someone just starting out in HR?
First and foremost, breathe. Getting into HR can be extremely rewarding, but requires a resilience and patience unlike any other field. Be creative and learn what your peers have to teach. Second, don't be afraid to ask questions and research what you don't know. The world of HR is constantly changing and it's up to you to keep up with those changes. Finally, take care of yourself. Believe in yourself. Keep growing.
