Summer Ferguson is the Human Resources Manager at Insurance Canopy, a mid-sized company of over 100 employees. Summer works diligently to implement new processes and streamline current ones. Summer has worked in the HR world for over 6 years but has had the ability to work one-on-one with individual employees since 2010. She is passionate about people, culture, and all things process improvement. Summer’s journey into the HR world is not a typical one but is one that Summer and her peers are proud of her for achieving. Over the past 20 years, she has built a reputation of building honest, trusting work relationships with everyone she interacts with. Summer’s hard work and drive to do her very best is why she is where she is today. She has a wide range of HR skills, including; Employment Law, Conflict Resolution, HRIS Systems, FMLA/ADA, Employee Relations, Call Center Management, Leadership, Training, and Team Building.
Summer has learned that everyone’s path into the HR world can be different—you don’t have to go to a university and earn a degree in HR to work in that capacity. As long as you are willing to put in the individual work to learn and grow every single day, you can make your way to the top and help make a difference. Summer is a mother to three children, a wife of 22 years, and the youngest sibling of 6 girls — yes, all girls! When Summer is not at work she is playing chauffeur, attending extracurricular activities leaving her on the go from morning to night. When Summer is feeling overwhelmed, a nap, some milk chocolate, peanut butter, and a Coke will get her through anything!
What words of advice and encouragement would you give to someone just starting out in HR?
Do not be afraid to ask questions! Just because you may not know what the answer is or know how to handle a situation does not make you any less of an individual, it means you are learning and growing!
