Lilian Phung attributed her curiosity about human behavior, social interaction, and personal development to growing up in the corporate environment through the eyes and experience of a Gen 1.5 Asian American. Lilian firmly believes that although one may not have control of the circumstances they encounter, they more than often can create the experiences that they want to see from these circumstances. One of the keys to being able to do this is having strong self-awareness and being intentional about continual personal growth. As a certified human resources professional and leadership coach, Lilian has made it her life’s work to help individuals strengthen their self-awareness so they can consciously lead their best lives.

What words of advice and encouragement would you give to someone just starting out in HR?

Be curious. Ask not only about how to do something you're asked to do, but also the "Why?" for it needing completion and why it is being done in that certain way. Scan for opportunities to learn and grow. Take initiative and be proactive about your own development. Don't wait for a certain project or task being assigned or given to you, look at what skills you want to develop and what you can do to help your team/company as you're buffing up those skills.
