What if you knew the “why” behind every single thing your team members and coworkers did? Think about how that would change meetings, collaboration, productivity, and office relationships. No, you’ll never know exactly why certain people accomplish tasks, make decisions, and solve problems in certain ways. How do I know this? At Skipio we constantly explore the characteristics that inform our decisions and behaviors. We learn about every single employee’s “why” by focusing on what they intrinsically do best. That’s why we proudly call ourselves a strengths-based company. 

What is means to be a strengths-based company?

Clifton Strengths Assessment

Every employee, past and present, has taken the Clifton Strengths assessment which outlines 34 strengths within four “domains.” They also met with our strengths coach, Wyn Dunford, to better understand what those strengths mean for us in context.

Wyn often explains strengths as the lens through which we view the world. By examining our strengths, we better understand how we individually learn, grow, excel, and help others.

But we don’t just know our own personal strengths. We publicize them.

Our top 10 strengths are posted at each of our desks. At any given moment you can walk around and get to know your coworkers a little bit better.

We also have an app that lists and describes how each person’s strengths contribute, and what they need to succeed.

What’s more, we participate in monthly “deep dive” trainings. On these trainings we split into small groups to better understand our own strengths and the strengths of others. That way we can better serve each other (and our customers).

In short, being a strengths-based company means everyone strives for inter-dependence.

How we benefit from strengths

Thanks to our strengths-focused conversations, we gain insight into how our coworkers, managers, and executive team complete tasks and projects.

By knowing a person’s strengths:

  • We can know how to train them in a way that will resonate. This gives them the tools they need to succeed.
  • We do a better job addressing each other’s questions, negotiating, and even arguing.
  • Managers give people tasks that suit their strengths. This makes everyone happier and more efficient.

Ultimately, utilizing our strengths helps us deliver amazing experiences to our clients because everyone works to their fullest potential.

Strengths in action

Earlier this year, we went through a trial period for a new product offering. A special team was organized to get it all done. This team included people from every Skipio department and every strengths domain.

Here’s a high-level overview of how their strengths contributed to the trial program’s success.

People with Strategic Thinking strengths (Learner and Input) played a huge part in planning the program. They figured out what would and would not work and made sure the team could actually deliver on its promises to clients. They created educational materials, built connections to our software, and provided client-specific messaging.

Those with strong Influencing and Relationship strengths (including Communication, Activator, and Includer) educated and converted potential clients willing to try out the new program. They helped clients understand what they needed to do and what Skipio would do. 

We relied on those with Executing talents (Achiever, Responsibility, and Belief) to help us turn our ideas into reality. They made sure everything got done how it was supposed to and built systems for tracking and sharing clients’ results.

Disclaimer, every person who helped execute didn’t just use Executing strengths, and every person who talked with clients didn’t only use Influencing strengths. 

Each person’s combination of strengths influenced every task they handled. This helped everyone naturally take on various roles because they knew which of their strengths would help in specific situations.

How strengths affect our culture

Not every day is filled with special assignments or projects, but they don’t have to be. Company leaders make a specific effort to give people responsibilities that let them use their strengths daily.


Because we feel happy, fulfilled, and excited to come to work when we have opportunities to exercise our intrinsic strengths. We do better work, and we know exactly how we contribute.

We enjoy specific and repeated opportunities to build our relationships and develop stronger teams. We get to know each other more personally and invest our time in helping each other use our strengths often.
